Black Americana British Style Golliwog Cookie Jar

The Golliwog or Golliwogg is a blackfaced African American caricature created in the late 1800s. It is relatively unknown in the United States, but was historically very popular in Europe.

The first Golliwogg was created by Florence Kate Upton, an American born of English parents. When Upton moved to England at age 14, she spent several years drawing and developing her artistic skills. In order to afford tuition to art school, she illustrated a children's book entitled "The Adventures of Two Dutch Dolls featuring the Golliwogg".

Our Golliwog cookie jar is a perfect gift for any fan of early black memorabilia.

This cookie jar captures a composite of many of the historically important "Golliwog" figures, with mirror black skin, red lips and a colorful "suit" with the traditional striped pants.

Each jar is completely hand painted. This gives each piece an individuality and personality not found in most of today's imported mass-produced ceramic goods. The golliwog cookie jar is approximately 12 inches tall.

Three Piece Chalkware Seahorse Family PY Design

Our three piece chalkware seahorse family pays tribute to the wonderful anthropomorphic animals created by the PY company in the WWII era. Full of vibrant color and kitsch charm, these sweet little seahorses helped the spirits of our nation in the 1940's. Their darling rhinestone eyes catch the light and they are heavily accented with lots of bright gold detailing.

Each seahorse is painted in a two tone color scheme, and then heavily shellacked with a tough coating to keep your seahorse family protected for many years.

The father and mother seahorses measures about 5.5 inches in length, and the little girl is just under 4 inches.

Baba Yaga, the Scandinavian Autumn Crone, is the inspiration for this very traditionally styled "kitchen witch"; cookie jar. According to legend, the presence of the kitchen witch will "protect your kitchen from fires, keep your bread from falling and scare away evil spirits."

One little kitchen witch wears a black head scarf (for pepper), and her sister wears a contrasting white head scarf (for salt). There is no cold paint on these shakers, so they are fade, flake and scratch resistant and completely washable.
